New Zealand Syrah

New Zealand Syrah comes from the same grape as Shiraz, with the two being very similar in both style and taste. The word “Syrah” simply means the wine is made in the French style, as opposed to Shiraz, which is the Australian style. Syrah is produced in wine growing regions with cooler climates, like New Zealand, while Shiraz is typically made in hotter climates.

New Zealand Syrah is paired well with spicy foods, hearty cheeses, foods containing a lot of herbs and especially red meats. NZ Wine Online has selected some of the finest bottles of New Zealand Syrah for you to choose from.

Mission Estate 'White Label' Hawkes Bay Syrah 2009
We thought their reserve label was excellent value and along they came with this fantastic syrah at a few dollars cheaper just to keep us happy. This is classic Hawkes Bay Syrah from a superb vintage. Vibrant red and dark berry notes with some spicy black pepper overtones. A fruit-driven palate showing soft tannins and good length.

Villa Maria Private Bin Hawkes Bay Syrah 2009
A stunning example of NZ Syrah from the Hawkes Bay. 2.5% each of Grenache & Viognier give an incredibly soft, mouthfilling, perfumed Syrah. Instantly appealing on the front of the palate with sweet dark fruits and a great spicy, warm long finish.

Mission Estate Reserve Hawkes Bay Syrah 2009
Our team rated this 4.5/5 on average and thought it was outstanding value for a Hawkes Bay Syrah (or any Syrah for that matter). Lovely perfumed nose of pepper, leather and firm tannins on the palate. Will benefit from further ageing.

Stonecroft 'Serine' Hawkes Bay Syrah 2010
A great find from a boutique producer in Hawkes Bay, using some of the oldest Syrah vines in the country. The palate leads with berryfruit and black cherries, together with vanilla and spice. The oak is nicely balanced and the wine has elegant, finely textured tannins. Velvety texture, a lovely clean finish and a long length.

Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels Hawkes Bay Syrah 2010
Ripe fresh cherry melds with floral honeysuckle and lavender notes and black pepper. The satin like texture gives way to fleshy, vibrant blueberry fruit. The palate finishes with some charcoal and flint to add mineral interest and complexity. A master example from the gimblett gravels.

Te Mata Bullnose Hawkes Bay Syrah 2010
We are unabashedly enthusiastic about this wine. Made from some of the oldest Syrah vines in New Zealand, and receives great plaudits from wine writers year after year. The '09 received 98/100 from Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, and the 2010 is another strong vintage for Hawkes Bay reds.

Man O War Dreadnought Waiheke Island Syrah 2008
This is such a well-awarded wine, given it's short history. Man O War are seriously leading the charge of Waiheke island wineries across many varietals, and the Dreadnought is a stunner. Florals and white pepper on the nose lead to a muscular palate flecked with spice and minerality.

Kidnapper Cliffs Hawkes Bay Syrah 2010
From a sensational Hawkes Bay vintage, the nose shows fresh blackberries, steamed plum pudding, and an array of toasted spices. The suggestion of decadent fruit follows through to the palate; a transparent entrance veils the muscular structureand superfine tannins. Flavours of dark fleshed plums and red liquorice are tempered by a serious note of molassess and toasted nuts. This is elegance and power in the same package.
