Our First Bin Ends Sale

Having been up and running now for just over a year,we've done a big stock-take and reviewed our 270 wines currently on offer. This has thrown up a number of 'odds and ends' for us to radically discount so we can start our second year with a clean list. These are all still great drinking wines with Sauvignon Blancs starting as low as $7.95 and Pinot Noirs from $11.95. Be sure to get in quick as all stocks are strictly limited. For the full range, click on our BIN ENDS SPECIALS PAGE.

Wine Competition Highlights

There are a range of wine competitions that run right throughout the year around the globe, and keeping track of them can be a tiresome and sometimes pointless task. However, there are two significant events that have wrapped up in September that we feel are worth highlighting:

New Zealand International Wine Show

The NZIWS has only been up and running now for just on 5 years and has already grown in to New Zealand's largest show with over 2100 wines entered in this year's competition. The show is unique in that it pits NZ wines up against international entries, giving us a good benchmark for how NZ wine stacks up against the rest of the world. You can read a full ist of the results at their website HERE. Sadly many of the trophy winning wines aren't available in Australia, but one that is available and we strongly recommend is the Vavasour Awatere Valley Pinot Gris 2009 - Trophy Pinot Gris for the show. This has long been one of our favourites and at $21.95 is an absolute bargain.

The Tri-Nations Wine Challenge

The Tri-Nations Wine Challenge is an invitational only event, put together by three well-known Wine Journalists. Huon Hooke selects the Australian Wines for the show, Bob Campbell MW selects the NZ wines for the show and Michael Fridjhon chooses the South African entries. Huon Hooke wrote a wonderful article about the show, and New Zealand's ongoing success which you can view HERE.
Some Key highlights for us:
A New Zealand Riesling takes out the Aromatics Trophy (Mt Difficulty Target Gully Riesling 2009 - Just $28.95)
Vidal Reserve Syrah 2007 wins the Syrah/Shiraz trophy - A huge result for NZ, given the quality of competition in this category. Sadly this wine not available in Australia.
NZ also won the trophy for Bordeaux Blend - another massive result showing that NZ Cabernets and Merlots are starting to find their feet. Congrats to Villa Maria for their trophy-winning 2007 Reserve Cabernet Merlot. Sadly this wine is also not available in Australia.
The winner for Best Pinot Noir, and Wine of the Show (drumroll please) went to the CRAGGY RANGE TE MUNA RD 2008 PINOT NOIR. This is a gem of a wine, capping off a stellar vintage for Martinborough (though we think the 2009's may just be better again!) Craggy Range's Pinot programme is on fire at the moment and this is a well-deserved award. Get in quick, as we suspect our suppliers' stocks will be quickly depleted as this news starts to filter out!
A full list of the results from the Tri-Nations Challenge is available at their website.
