Te Mata 'Bullnose' Syrah 2009 has arrived!!

Hawkes Bay winegrowers are starting to develop just a wee hint of a smile on their faces and are looking a bit more relaxed than normal - some might even say cocky. After 2007 was hailed as one of the greatest recent vintages, they were blessed with another solid vintage in 2008 and then BAM! 2009 pops up as another absolute beauty - arguably bettering the 2007. Certainly the 2009 reds we have tried out of Hawkes Bay have all been stunners.

It still pays though to pick your wines by brand, as opposed to just vintage reports! There were a few tricky aspects to the 2009 vintage, including a bit of rain late Feb, and some red grapes from Hawkes Bay may not have achieved full ripeness, potentially leading to a stemmy or leafy character in the wine. One of those wineries you can of course rely on year in and year out is Te Mata.

The Te Mata Bullnose is a quite extraordinary wine. Made from the best Syrah fruit from Te Mata's estate vineyards, they consistently achieve incredibly stunning aromatics, soft yet powerful fruit driven flavour profiles and an excellent tannin structure.  The 2009 has an impressive deep magenta colour, with aromas and flavours of raspberry and cherry syrup, baking spices and lavender. The rich palate displays velvety tannins underpinning plum and cream notes, leading to a long, elegant finish.

Te Mata have rated this their BEST BULLNOSE EVER - A claim not made lightly and one we wholeheartedly agree with.
