How to Make Great Pinot Noir - Part 1: Growing the Grapes

“Pinot Noir is made in the vineyard” is a common maxim you will hear from Pinot Noir grapegrowers and winemakers alike. Of course it’s true that all wine’s final taste will be heavily dependent on how the grapes were grown, but it seems to be especially so for Pinot. Wim Julicher from Julicher Estate has kindly written this two part series for NZWINEONLINE on how to make great Pinot Noir. In Part 1, he discusses the grape growing processes he employed which have lead to such great success for many of his Pinot Noirs, culminating in last year’s trophy at the Air NZ Wine Awards.
